Field trip to “the field”
AKA
Weeds to Herbs Identification Walk
Do you know the names of the non-grass plants that grow in your yard or field?
Do your children know them?
When your child puts into their mouth a part of a plant picked from your yard, are you concerned or even
worried if it’s safe or wondering if you should be calling the poison control center?
Psalm 104:14 says: “He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he
may bring forth food out of the earth;” Does this verse still apply to us today? Herbs for food or for
medicinal service? Do you know how to apply it?
Does our perfect God make anything that is useless or worthless? Did God make useless plants?
Or do they all have a purpose? Could we be better stewards of creation by learning more about them?
Do you know which of the plants commonly considered weeds in gardens and yards are really edible plants
that are considered more nutritious than some of the common garden plants?
Could you save money, have a more productive garden and improve your health if you were familiar with
the plants native to your yard?
Could you make gardening easier, more nutritious, and more productive with a permaculture style garden
instead of the standard monoculture style? Would you like to learn more about it?
Is it a weed or an herb?
Let’s define those words:
Weed “Any plant growing in cultivated ground to the injury of the desired vegetation, unsightly, useless, or
injurious plant.”
Herb “A plant, whose parts are used for food, for medicinal purposes, or for their scent or flavor.”
(Definitions from Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary.)
After this walk, I hope you will find that your field, garden & yard have more herbs and less weeds than you previously thought.
